Flying with Toddlers: Genius Tips to Survive (and Maybe Even Enjoy) a Long Plane Ride!

Traveling with a toddler on a long flight? You’re brave, but you’re also in luck! With a little prep and some well-curated activities, you can actually make the journey fun. Imagine: a calm toddler, busy hands, and a bit of quiet time for you. Yes, it is possible! Here’s how to survive those long hours in the air—and maybe even have a few smiles along the way.

My First Time Taking a Long Flight with My Toddler

Let me set the scene: my almost-3-year-old daughter and I were about to embark on an epic journey from Barcelona to Miami, with a layover in Lisbon. I was so nervous, it was our first time taking such a long flight together, and I had no idea how she’d handle the hours, the new surroundings, and the mid-flight exhaustion. I kept picturing myself trying to calm a tired, cranky toddler in the middle of the aisle while everyone around us glared. So, with that lovely image in mind, I prepped like my sanity depended on it.

And you know what? We actually made it through not just fine but almost smoothly, thanks to a few tricks I’ll share here. That flight taught me that a little extra planning and a few “toddler travel hacks” can make a world of difference.

1. Pack a ‘Magic Busy Bag’ Full of Surprises

The “busy bag” was a game-changer. I packed a bag full of new activities and small toys she hadn’t seen before—stickers, coloring books, flat beads for making necklaces and bracelets, and our soon-to-be-released Printable Busy Book (packed with activities designed to keep little hands occupied for hours). Every time she got restless, I’d pull out a new item, and her eyes would light up. By the time we landed in Miami, I think she felt like she’d been to a mini art studio in the sky!

2. DIY Jewelry with Flat Beads

Who doesn’t love a little airplane fashion show? Pack some flat beads and stretchy cords for a fun jewelry-making session. These are easy for little hands to thread, and the whole activity helps improve focus. Plus, your toddler will have their own “custom-made” jewelry to show off by the time you land!

3. Load Up on Snacks—Like, All the Snacks

Flying works up an appetite, and snacks are a life-saver. Fill a few snack-sized containers with a mix of toddler-friendly favorites—like veggie chips, cereal puffs, crackers, dried fruit, and a few special treats. Keep a couple of “surprise snacks” hidden for when you really need a distraction. (Trust me, you’ll know when that moment comes!)

4. Create an In-Seat Art Studio

Bring along a coloring book, washable markers, and some extra blank paper for doodles. Coloring can keep kids focused and calm, and the excitement of new colors and pages can hold their attention. Pro tip: some airplane trays work great with magnets, so a magnetic doodle board or small magnet activity set can also add to the fun!

5. Download New Shows and Audiobooks for On-the-Go Entertainment

Screens aren’t the enemy when it comes to flights. Load up on a mix of favorite shows and a couple of new ones. (The novelty can buy you extra screen time!) If your little one enjoys listening to stories, download a couple of short audiobooks or storytelling podcasts, they’re like storytime on the go.

6. Dress in Cozy Layers & Prep for Temperature Swings

Planes can feel like a chilly wind tunnel one minute and a sauna the next, so dress your toddler in layers for easy adjustments. Pack a lightweight blanket, a small pillow, and maybe even their favorite stuffed animal. They’ll feel cozy, comfortable, and more likely to fall asleep.

8. Bring Reusable Sticker Scenes with Bumpy Stickers for Easy Removal

Reusable stickers are like little magic wands for plane rides! Pick up a set with fun themes—animals, cars, nature scenes—and let your toddler create and re-create their own little worlds on the tray table or window. Look for the “bumpy” kind of stickers—they’re easy to peel off quickly when it’s time to pack up. That way, you’re not stuck scraping stickers off tray tables while the plane lands. They’re mess-free, easy to pack, and totally toddler-approved!

9. Make Time for In-Flight Stretching and Wiggle Breaks

Find opportunities to walk the aisles and let your toddler stretch when it’s safe to do so. A quick stroll or a stop at the bathroom gives them a change of scenery and helps them burn off a little energy.

10. Keep It Calm and Enjoy the Ride

You’re a rockstar for even attempting this journey! Remember, things won’t be perfect—and that’s okay. If there’s a spill or a meltdown, take a deep breath and smile it off. Every parent on the plane gets it, and chances are they’re silently cheering you on!

With these tips—and our Airplane-Themed Printable Busy Book launching soon—long flights with toddlers don’t have to feel like an endurance test. You’ll be prepared, your little one will be entertained, and you might even get to enjoy that coffee in peace.

Happy flying!
